A short police chase has led to the arrest of a man police believe was carrying drugs. Pennsylvania authorities in Upper Saucon Township arrested a 26-year-old man, who now faces felony drug charges as well as several related charges. He was unable to post bail and remained in police custody ahead of a Jan. 2 preliminary court date.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, officers attempted to stop the man for a traffic violation around 9:15 on the night of Dec. 23. At that point, the man allegedly fled the traffic stop before crashing into a tree some 200 yards away. Police immediately took the man into custody and performed a search of his vehicle. Officers on the scene believe the man may have been under the influence of drugs at the time.
The search revealed what police believe to be quantities of cocaine, ecstasy, heroin and marijuana. The man now stands charged with three counts of felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. Several other charges were also filed, including DUI, misdemeanor fleeing and five traffic offenses including driving with a suspended license.
In order for drug charges of this type to translate into a conviction, Pennsylvania authorities will need to provide compelling evidence not only that the substances allegedly found in his vehicle were in fact drugs, but also that he was involved in the delivery of these substances. This could prove difficult if his arrest and the subsequent search of his property were not properly carried out. His defense representation will carefully review any evidence the prosecution intends to use against him in order to ensure his day in court is fair and balanced.
